Bishop Message for Independence Day

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Happy Independence Day to you and your families. I thank God for this day and for our great country. We are blessed to live in a place that protects our natural rights and allows us the freedom to live out our faith publicly. This freedom is not guaranteed around the rest of the world and for that we must never take it for granted.

Today, I want to reflect on true freedom and what it means for us as Christians. We are called to the freedom that can only be attained in the total abandonment to God’s divine will. Our burdens feel light when we offer our concerns and struggles to Jesus. The freedom we desire in the depths of our hearts was won for us on the shoulders of Christ on the cross.

We have the responsibility to uphold the freedom gained for us by others who have gone before us, and we have the duty to perfect it, with Jesus’ help, for those who will follow us. We read in the book of Galatians, “You brothers were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature, rather, serve one another in love” (Gal 5:13-14).

Freedom is not possible without love. It is enunciated through virtuous living and the imitation of Jesus, who broke the shackles of sin and death. Today, think of one way you can restore freedom and peace in your own home and personal life. Start with something small, perhaps offering a few moments for an unspoken act of charity for another, and watch as your life and our culture are transformed.

Regardless of who holds office, you can always find true freedom in Christ the King, who is the ultimate source of freedom, peace and love.

Happy Independence Day! May God bless America!

New Dynamic Model of Family Spirituality

New, Dynamic Model of Family Spirituality

Families need opportunities to experience their Catholic faith more meaningfully in the home. During the Renewing Catholic Family Life Webinar Series, Dr. Gregory and Lisa Popcak of the Peyton Institute for Domestic Church Life will explore a new, dynamic model of family spirituality and family ministry: the Liturgy of Domestic Church Life. Faithfully Catholic and drawing from the best insights from the social sciences, the Liturgy of Domestic Church Life helps families experience the faith as the source of warmth in their homes and pass it on to the next generation.

The five-week series is open to diocesan and parish leaders, family life ministers, clergy, educators, and anyone involved in ministry that touches family life. Participants will discover a new approach for family ministry that will empower all families to:

• Live the “Catholic difference” in their relationships
• Meet Christ more meaningfully in the day-to-day activities of family life
• Love and cherish each other more deeply
• Create rituals that strengthen their ability to work, play, talk, and pray together
• Become the primary engines of evangelization and positive social change

The webinars will take place on the five consecutive Fridays from July 8 to Aug. 5 at 11:30 a.m. (ET). Each 90-minute session will involve ample opportunity to learn, discuss, and apply the concepts presented. Participants will leave each webinar with new insights and practical ideas to transform Catholic family life.

Please consider recommending the series to staff at your parish, diocese, or chancery who may be interested. More information and registration are available here.

We were born for this

The South Carolina Catholic Conference has launched a site dedicated to pro-life, pro-family organizations and ministries in the Palmetto State. Its name, bornforthis.life, takes inspiration from St. Joan of Arc’s message, “We were born for a time such as this.”

This website is designed to be a resource hub for mobilizing Catholics in the new pro-life era. We were born for this era, and it is time for us to engage. Our mission is to save souls and to care for those around us. We will support all those in need of love and care in our communities, especially those who have been affected by the practice of abortion.

We pledge to stand in the gap to support women, children and families with life-affirming resources. We want every child, every woman and every family to be supported in their dignity as a child of God.

Diocese of Charleston has a new Bishop

Vatican City, Feb 22, 2022 / 05:05 am

Pope Francis has appointed Father Jacques Fabre as the new Catholic bishop of Charleston, South Carolina.

The Vatican announced the 66-year-old priest’s appointment on Feb. 22.

Fabre was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. In the early 1990s, he was a chaplain at a Haitian refugee camp at the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He has served as an administrator at the San Felipe de Jesús Mission in Georgia for the past 12 years.

He will succeed Bishop Robert Guglielmone, 76, who was cleared by the Vatican in December 2020 after an investigation into an allegation that he had sexually abused an eight-year-old boy beginning in 1978 when he was a priest in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, New York.

Pope Francis has appointed Father Jacques Fabre, CS, as the 14th Bishop of Charleston. Bishop-elect Fabre is a member of the religious order the Missionaries of St. Charles, or Scalabrinian Fathers.

“I am humbled to be named Bishop of Charleston and look forward to serving the people of South Carolina,” said Bishop-elect Fabre. “As shepherd, it is my hope to work together to strengthen our Church and project God’s love to all who we encounter.”

Bishop-elect Fabre was born on Nov. 13, 1955, in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. He immigrated to New York City and completed his secondary education. He joined the Scalabrinians and took first vows in 1982, and was ordained a priest Oct. 10, 1986.

Over the past 35 years, Bishop-elect Fabre has served in many places — such as Cuba, Colombia, Rome and the Dominican Republic — and in a variety of roles. He was serving as administrator of Mission San Felipe de Jesus in Forest Park, Ga., when he received the call to become the Bishop of Charleston. He speaks five languages including English, Spanish, Italian, French and Creole.

Bishop-elect Fabre will be ordained and installed on April 29.

Please join me in praying for his ministry:

God, eternal shepherd, you tend your Church in many ways and rule us with love. You have chosen your servant, Jacques, to be a shepherd of your flock. Give him a spirit of courage and right judgment, a spirit of knowledge and love. By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care, may he build your Church as a sign of salvation for the world. Amen.
